How do you get a free custom shirt mockup before you pay?

How free custom shirt mockups work: what to send, what arrives within 24 hours, revisions, and why approval should come before payment.

A mixed group planning a coordinated shirt order together
Planning reference: one clear list keeps a group order moving.

Short answer: you send a rough idea — even a paragraph or a phone sketch — and a real designer sends back a real mockup within 24 hours, at no cost, no obligation. You only pay once you approve what you see. Here's how the process actually works, what a "mockup" really means, and the mistakes that turn a free mockup into an expensive surprise.

What is a shirt mockup, exactly?

A mockup is a realistic preview of your design placed on the actual shirt — the right color, the right print position, at the right size. It's not a floating logo on a white background. It's the shirt your group will actually wear, shown from the front (and back, if you're printing there too). A good mockup is what ends the group-chat debate: seeing it settles the argument faster than fifty messages.

Free mockup vs paid design work: what's the difference?

  • Free mockup service (what we do): a real designer takes your idea and turns it into a print-ready mockup. Free, unlimited groups can request one, no card required.
  • Design-your-own tools: a template + clipart builder. Fast but generic — everybody's Class of 2027 shirt looks the same.
  • Paid brand design ($200–500+): a full logo development project — great for a real business identity, overkill for a one-off group order.

What you send us (it's less than you think)

You don't need a designer to talk to a designer. Any one of these is enough to start:

  • A sentence: "Class of 2027, navy hoodie, retro varsity feel, want our motto on the back."
  • A phone photo of a napkin sketch.
  • A rough Canva or PowerPoint mockup you're not happy with.
  • A reference image ("something in this style, but for a family reunion").
  • A logo file if you already have one (PDF, AI, SVG, or high-res PNG — see the design agreement guide).

What you get back in 24 hours

  • A realistic mockup on the exact garment and color you picked, front (and back if applicable).
  • An honest note if the design will look better with a small change — a size tweak, a print method swap, a color choice for washability.
  • A total, all-in price including printing, shipping, and duty. No line-item surprises. See how 100-person pricing works →

How many revisions do you get?

As many as it takes for your group to love it — within reason. In practice, most groups land in 2–3 rounds. Because revisions are free and you approve before paying, there's no pressure to nail it on round one. This is the whole point of the "approve before you pay" model: you carry zero risk during the design phase.

How to give feedback that saves a revision round

Point to the exact thing you want changed and give a useful reference when you have one. A designer can act on “make the crest about 10 inches wide” much faster than “something feels off.”

Too vagueUseful feedback
“The colors look off.”“Match the red in our attached school guide, Pantone 186 C.”
“Make the logo bigger.”“Increase the front mark to about 10 inches wide.”
“Move it somewhere else.”“Use a left-chest mark instead of a full-front print.”
“Try another shirt.”“Show the same artwork on a navy heavyweight tee.”

Vector files such as AI, EPS, or SVG are best. A high-resolution transparent PNG also works well. If all you have is a small screenshot, send it anyway and say where it came from — the designer can tell you whether it needs rebuilding before print.

You never spend a dollar on a design you haven't seen and approved. And you never pay the balance on shirts you haven't seen photos of.

Why "designing together" beats picking a template

Templates are fast, but nobody feels ownership. When a group gets involved in the design — even at the "we sent a paragraph and reacted to a mockup" level — it becomes ours. That shift is why the shirt actually gets worn instead of stuffed in a drawer. A real designer's job in the mockup phase is to translate your group's story into something wearable — not to hand you a stock template with your name plugged in.

Mistakes that turn a free mockup into a costly one

  • Not sending the mockup to the group before approving. The mockup is the debate-settler; use it that way. Circulate it, get the yes, then approve.
  • Approving without a physical proof discussion. For very large orders (300+), ask whether a paid physical sample makes sense. For 50–200 shirts, the mockup + production photos are the standard proof path.
  • Waiting until 10 days before the event. A free mockup takes 24 hours; the approval-to-door planning range is 15–20 business days. Start 5–6 weeks out so design and distribution also have room. Full timeline here →
  • Sending a logo screenshot from social media. Low-res files print blurry. If it's the only file you have, tell us — a designer can often rebuild it clean.

Is a "free mockup" too good to be true?

It's not free from our side — it's built into the model. We're a small studio that lives on real group orders (50+), not on drop-in single-shirt sales. Investing 30–60 minutes of a designer's time to send a great mockup is how we earn the order. If your group doesn't move forward, you lose nothing and we've done free portfolio work. That's the trade, and it's the same reason we can hold to no setup fees, no per-color surcharges on full color (thanks to DTF printing), and no customs bills on delivery.

Free mockup FAQ

Is a digital mockup the same as a physical sample?

No. A digital mockup confirms garment color, artwork, placement, and approximate scale before production. For very large or technically unusual orders, ask whether a paid physical sample is worth adding to the schedule.

What if I do not have a logo or finished design?

A sentence, phone sketch, reference image, class year, team name, or event theme is enough to start. A real designer turns that direction into a wearable first mockup.

Do I have to order after requesting the free mockup?

No. The first mockup is free and does not require payment information. You commit only after approving the design direction and written all-in quote.

What happens if the finished batch differs from the approved mockup?

You receive photos of the finished batch before the balance and shipment. If something materially differs from the approved design, it is reviewed before the order ships under the written order terms.
