What is DTF printing (and why it's great for full color)?

Short answer: DTF (direct-to-film) printing prints your entire design onto a special film, then heat-presses it onto the garment in one pass—so any number of colors costs one flat price, with no per-color setup fee.

How DTF printing works

DTF stands for direct-to-film. Your artwork is printed in full color onto a clear PET film, dusted with a hot-melt adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-pressed onto the fabric. Because the whole image transfers at once, DTF doesn’t care whether your design has 1 color or 50—gradients, photos, and fine detail all come through.

That’s the big difference from screen printing, which builds an image one ink color at a time and charges a setup fee per color, per side. With DTF, a four-color crest costs the same to decorate as a one-color logo.

FAQ

Does DTF crack or peel? A properly cured, heat-pressed DTF transfer is washable and crack-resistant. Wash inside out in cold water and skip the dryer’s highest heat to extend its life. See Will my custom shirt print crack or fade?

Is DTF cheaper than screen printing for full color? For multi-color and photo-real designs, usually yes—DTF charges one flat price regardless of color count, while screen printing adds a setup fee per color. For 1–2 solid colors in large quantities, screen printing can win. See Screen printing vs. DTF cost

What’s the minimum order for DTF shirts? At Togethread, the minimum is 50 pieces per order, which keeps per-shirt pricing fair for groups and teams.
